User Session & UI Toolkit microconference

This is the page for the proposed microconference during Plumbers 2014 about problems related to the user sessions, often faced by UI toolkits. This microconference is not about discussing UX guidelines or bugs in user-facing applications. Instead, it's about problems often faced by toolkit developers, while trying to provide a consistent functionality to application-writers.

Topics

* Graphical problems:

  • Detecting display server, like X, Wayland, Mir, DirectFB, EGLFS
  • Client-side decorations vs WM-driven decorations
  • Screens with varying DPI:
    • assets, fonts, scaling content (or not)
    • multiple monitor support, detecting screen type (handheld, laptop, TV, projector, etc.)
  • Touch-driven interfaces: detecting finger size

* Non-graphical:

  • Porting D-Bus binding libraries to kdbus
  • Common config/settings storage
    • Back up and restoration of settings
    • Upgrading
  • Updating XDG specifications:
    • Base Dir; where to store application state, etc.
