Containers topics

In the last year containers on Linux have seen a number of new technologies and changes. Changes to cgroups, new tools like docker and lmctfy and continued maturity of the supporting Linux subsystems.

Areas of interest include:

  • cgroup hierarchy redesign and management systems (systemdlmctfy, etc)
  • management of container filesystems and de-duplication (btrfs snapshots, device mapper, etc)
  • cross container networking
  • checkpoint restore in userspace
  • container snapshot design for all backing stores
  • container clone hooks - integrate into templates? (updating /etc/mailhost etc)
  • standardizing the “application container”
  • current state of user namespaces
  • “leader pid” discovery for entering and modifying namespaces (docker libcontainer, machinectl, etc)
  • container migration between hosts
  • load balancing/failing over between containers
  • starting containers on-demand
  • libcontainer.so for unified container management
  • simple network configuration between local and remote containers (SDN and VPC concepts)

Format

While last year's container mini-summit was quite popular, I think this year we should try to reduce the number of presentations (due to limited time) and instead try to get some more actual discussion going.

It seems like focusing on collaboration on cgroup management, checkpoint restart and common libraries and tools would be a good place to start and should keep us occupied for quite a while.

Coming out of the summit we should have a clear set of decisions/designs and hopefully action owners.
