Microconference - Virtualization

The Linux Plumbers 2013 Microconference-Virtualization track focuses on general Linux Virt and related technologies. There are quite a few active projects that encompass virtualization, and this forum will be available for developers to meet and collaborate.

The structure will be similar to what was followed the previous years, 2012, 2011 and 2010. The emphasis is on discussing unfinished projects and sticky topics, and this will be strictly followed. Expect sessions to be cut short by the session leaders if they veer into the 'talk' or 'advertisement' category.

Hot Issues to sort out

  • Can we bring networking back into userspace?
  • What should virtio PCI look like on a PCI express bus?
  • Should image formats be supported by in-kernel devices like tcm_vhost?
  • Is there any reason to merge vhost_blk?

Userspace topics

  • Live migration
  • QEMU vs. Native KVM Tool
  • QEMU module infrastructure
  • Management tools (libvirt et al)
  • NUMA aware allocation by qemu (instead of relying on Automatic NUMA balancer)
  • QEMU: List devices based on different platforms (Currently, it lists all the devices even they are not supported for some platforms).

Kernel topics

  • vhost*
  • Post-copy hooks (MADV_USERFAULT)
  • pv-mmio
  • EFI support in Xen - current state of development

Possible Topics

  • AF_VIRT socket family to share between hypervisors
  • vhost-blk/vhost-scsi and kernel support for image formats
  • Ability to present and expand virtual disks on the fly
  • vhost-net vs. virtio-net and improving performance of tun/tap
  • Web-based control and monitoring interface

Schedule

The schedule of the 2013 Virtualization Plumbers Micro Conference is as follows. Note presentation slides can be found on the Plumbers page by following the links to the abstracts:

  • Session 1 - Presenter 1
  • Session 2 - Presenter 2
  • etc…

Key Attendees

  • Anthony Liguori (QEMU)
  • Amit Shah (virtio-serial)
  • Michael Roth (migration)

Discussion notes

This is a good place to record notes from your session. All too often, if notes were not written down, the session might as well not have happened.
