Audio remains a topic of very active development within Linux, especially in the embedded domain, and there's a big divide both between embedded and desktop world and between the people writing applications that use audio and the people implementing the kernel frameworks.
In no particular order, some perennial issues and a few new ones:
* Management of DSPs, especially larger and more flexible ones, is still very much up in the air in mainline:
* Exploding control numbers are starting to have real performance impacts in userspace, is there anything we can do about that? * Management of digital routing in embedded devices, still ongoing.
